USAY Infographic

For this poster, our class worked with the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY), a non-profit focused on a strength based approach to their cultural identity. One of their products is IndigiTRAILS, a free AR app that uses GPS to showcase digital art galleries throughout Calgary. The main objective of the poster is to generate awareness for the app, as well as secure more funding for newer Trails within the app.

Process

01

First, I conducted field research by participating in the Fort Calgary trail to understand how AR was implemented into this educational tool.

02

I created a persona for my target audience to brainstorm different directions I could take. Ultimately, I decided to focus on storytelling and the outdoor aspects.

03

There were a few iterations made for the layout on paper that were transferred into Adobe InDesign, then reworked until I got to my final layout.

04

I created the infographics in Adobe Illustrator with the information I gathered from the research stage, making sure they were cohesive with the rest of the poster by using similar colours, fonts, line weight, etc. I also had to make sure the sizing worked for each infographic, that it did not disrupt the flow of the layout.

Takeaways

The final product was guided by the choice of the hero. For this, I chose to focus on the most shocking information located within the 'Technology for Storytelling' section, and rearranged everything accordingly. Overall, this project taught me how to use margins, columns, and gutters to my advantage for good visual hierarchy. Also, I had practice with making my own infographics from my research, and tailored them to match the tone of the entire poster.
