Design Guide & Assets

For this semester long project, we developed and implemented a design system that adhered to our research on our topic. I chose to focus on United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

First Stages

Desk research took around a month and it was never ending, since the information I needed to collect constantly changed depending on my angle. Below is a document containing it.

Afterwards, I designed my style guide to accompany the information I collected. I wanted to showcase the information in a way that visually emphasized the goal of the SDG. There were minor tweaks made to the design system for the final prototypes.

Final Prototypes

We explored three different forms of storytelling media -- magazine, digital product, and artifact or installation. My target audience was public transit takers in Calgary, and I wanted to raise awareness about the pros of multimodal transportation, especially with the use of transit. The main concept for these assets was to create a modernization of a traditional mode of transportation, biking.

Since my main concept for this project was modernization, I went with bolder fonts, colors, and visuals.

Takeaways

I used minimal color and text on the website to allow more of the information to pop on the page.

This was a small scale mockup of my artifact, made with wooden skewers, clear printer paper, and card stock. It is a public transportation shelter with key messages.

I had to opportunity to develop and test a design system with color, type, layout, brand marks, and design rules. Also, I improved on my visual storytelling with three different kinds of media.
