Canmore VIS

This group visual identity system project for Canmore was completed over several weeks. Made by developing a deep understanding with, and capturing the genius loci - a distinctive feeling or the spirit of the place.

Beginning

Before we conducted any field research, I divided up the tasks between my partner and I, then conducted desk research in order to prepare for our field days.

During our ethnographic research, we collected photos, took notes on the behaviours of people, and immersed ourselves in the environment. We also conducted interviews with citizens, and created a public engagement activity to better understand the feelings of community members.

With all of this collected information, we created a cohesive research map through Mural.

First Iterations

After we had an understanding of the genus loci, we created iterations of the logo, icons, patterns, concept statement etc. before landing on the ones that best suited Canmore. We started this process brainstorming ideas onto paper, then transferring them over to Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.

Takeaways

The main takeaways from this project was learning how to collaborate and be an active team member on a longer project, how to conduct thorough desk and ethnographic research. Like creating a public engagement activity that generates useful data. Then, using all of the collected data to fuel and back up a cohesive idea, like for the brand identity of the Town of Canmore.
